My artwork revolves around the themes of identity, spirituality and the presence of a place over time. I find myself evolving through my own identity and questioning if our presence lives on when we die and how our presence effects us when we are alive. I have explored specific historical sites or spaces that I have been drawn to in the past 5 years of my life. I am also exploring the history of the photograph and how it does or does not preserve a person’s exact likeness.
I choose these themes because I am fascinated with the platonic and supernatural world. I believe that specific sites and buildings also have a certain presence of feelings from people that lingers on for a very long time. My work is based on my life; the struggle to exist and find my own path and the desire I have for the experience of the sublime and receptivity of other worldly creatures.
I appreciate the experience of taking a photograph; the snapshot of something or someone who is constantly changing. There is a specific likeness in the picture, but the likeness will never remain the same. I also appreciate examining photographs that I have not taken. I look at the presence a certain person or place has left behind.
I love physically working with my hands when I draw. It makes me feel as if I am a part of the drawing. I use the imprints of my fingers to create my unconscious image and bring it into the physical world.
I recently discovered my interest in collage. I enjoy collaging things of a similar likeness to evoke certain emotions. I like to put parts of life together and ponder what it could mean.
I want my audience to take what they will from my art; you do not have to see the work through my eyes only.
When I look into your eyes,
I stare back at myself.
Be all my sin’s remembered.
